Things to do inside -

We have a lot of things to keep you busy in the cottage. There are indoor toys and games in the toy chest upstairs in the twin bedroom.
Both houses have a lot of videos, covering all ages to keep everyone in the family happy.

There are bookcases in the cottage with picture books, novels and reference books. If you're looking for a quick read or a book to last you the week, there will be something there to suit you.

We have something a bit different - there are what we call fiddle baskets left around the place. They contain things that we and past guests have picked up because we thought it was interesting. There are odd things that have been found on the beach - shells, crab claws, fish eggs, odd stones and polished glass and plenty more. You are very welcome to add to the collection before you leave....

If you fancy a challenge, we have a well at Spylaw - it only has a few inches of water in it, and is now filled with rocks. But it's still there, and if you look, there is information in the cottage to let you know where it is - you won't find it without a clue!

The beds in the kids' room are all against the wall, leaving plenty of floor space to play.

Things to do outside -

Spylaw is really a place to play outside - the stuff indoors is only there if you get a wet day, or when you've run out of energy after a day on the beach!
We keep all the outdoor toys in a cupboard under the stairs. We've got loads of things to keep you busy, including a cricket set, footballs, tennis raquets and fishing nets for the beach.
We also have the space to run wild. The cottage has an enclosed walled garden, and if you are past the age where you need to be under a watchful eye, the paddock at the end of the gardens is football field sized!
And as we are away from any other houses and the village, we have no light pollution. Just take a look outside on a clear night, and see the detail in the night sky! We occasionally see the Northern Lights too.
We have our own free range chickens and cockerels at Spylaw.
They wander around the paddocks and fields all day, and have a wonderful life.
They quite like attention, and often try to look through the cottage window. So, if you would like to collect your own eggs, or feed the chickens, just ask!
They really are quite smart girls - they go home to their coops at night, and go back to lay their eggs too.
You'll probably find the ducks on the pond down the field, but they are quite shy, and you can't get too close to them.
Although the ducks have a wonderful pond, they still seem to prefer an old fish box filled with water to splash about in.
We keep sheep too, and they roam the fields. We borrow a ram from time to time, and our lambs are born from mid-April to the end of June.
The sheep are very friendly, and if you move slowly and are quiet, they will eat from your hand. As with the chickens, just ask us and we'll take you to feed them.
Xan, the ram, is on the left with the horns. Dotty is the oldest sheep, and she is in the front.

Wildlife -

Because Spylaw stands on its own in the countryside, we are lucky enough to have lots of wildlife -see what you can spot.
There is an owl which comes to Spylaw to sit on the gutters at each side of the house, and if you go out in the evening you are very likely to see the owls in the trees and hedges on the lane.
We also have a family of weasels in the wood, and just occasionally you will see them running along the paddock walls. As for birds of prey, you will be able to watch them hovering somewhere close to Spylaw at almost any time. Watch out for the pheasant who roosts in our pine tree, and seems to eat too much of the chicken meal.

Local Activities -

There is an almost endless list of things to do in the local area -
  • Beaches with sandy shores or rockpools
  • Castles, all with a gripping history
  • St Cuthbert's cave is just a mile away
  • Bikes can be hired locally
  • The Cheviot hills are on our doorstep
  • The river Till is just a walk down the lane

There are plenty of maps, books and information leaflets in the cottages.

    Come and see for yourself!
